Fairbanks Hosts Annual World Eskimo-Indian Olympics

Fairbanks, Alaska (AK) – The annual World Eskimo-Indian Olympic Games (WEIO) will take place at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks from July 19 through 22, 2017. A four-day series of traditional Alaska Native athletic competitions, WEIO draws Native athletes and dancers from around the state, the United States, Canada and Greenland, as well as visitors, fans and media from around the globe. In addition to athletic competitions, WEIO also offers indigenous dances, authentic arts and crafts for sale, beauty pageants and other cultural activities. The emcee at WEIO’s Wednesday, July 19th Opening Ceremony will be the renowned Irene Bedard, an Alaska Native American actor and activist who has played Native American characters in a variety of films. Bedard is perhaps best known for her role as the title character in the 1995 animated film Pocahontas.

Arkansas and Twin Lakes area open for business

Arkansas and the Twin Lakes area of The Natural State are open for business, despite the flooding and high water experienced in the spring.

“Yes, we had some high waters during the flooding in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas, but all of the resorts and all of our marinas and all of our hospitality industry are open for business,” explained Jeff Pipkin, CEO and economic director of the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce.

Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of WWI and the 75th Anniversary of WWII
May 26-27, 2017


To commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I and the 75th anniversary of World War II, the Virginia World War I and World War II Profiles of Honor Mobile Tour will visit Lynchburg on Friday, May 26 and Saturday May 27, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. The Profiles of Honor Mobile will welcome visitors at the foot of Monument Terrace at Church and Ninth Streets with an interactive exhibit and opportunities to digitize and archive family heirlooms and memorabilia in the Library of Virginia that relate to the wars.

By proclamation of Governor Asa Hutchinson, and in recognition of the positive economic, social, and cultural impact of the travel and tourism industry, Arkansas will celebrate May 7-13 as Tourism Week. In 2016, visitors who traveled in Arkansas spent an estimated $7.7 billion, which generated $538 million in state and local taxes, and supported more than 100,000 jobs.
Across the state, communities are planning to salute National Travel and Tourism Week in a variety of ways. Following is a list of places and activities planned, as submitted by the individual locations.
