Northern Lights Festival in North Little Rock ramping up

NORTH LITTLE ROCK (Wednesday, November 13, 2019) – As the Thanksgiving holiday looms closer, North Little Rock is preparing for its biggest holiday event in many years.

The Northern Lights Festival, scheduled for Saturday, November 30, 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the new Argenta Plaza at 510 Main Street in North Little Rock, is not a new festival but this year brings the tallest Christmas tree in the city’s history (38 feet plus a four-foot star) and the grand opening of the aforementioned plaza, a beautiful community space in the Argenta Arts District of North Little Rock.

“Argenta Plaza belongs to everyone in North Little Rock,” said North Little Rock Mayor Joe Smith. “Our Northern Lights Festival is a perfect opportunity for all neighborhoods to come together and celebrate the holiday season as one community.”

The City of North Little Rock, North Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau, North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce, Argenta Downtown Council and Argenta Community Theater have been hard at work for months putting together a full evening of free entertainment and holiday activities for all ages. The schedule is as follows:

  • 5 p.m. – Doors open
  • 5:30 p.m. – Grand Opening Ceremony of Argenta Plaza with North Little Rock Mayor Joe Smith and other dignitaries
  • 6:30 p.m. – Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
  • 7:00 p.m. – Big Dam Horns Concert
  • 9:00 p.m. – Fireworks Show

During the festival, attendees will enjoy horse carriage rides; small holiday market of locally-made goods; food trucks and libations; kids’ zone with photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus and making holiday cards for veterans; story time with Laman Library on a Rock Region METRO streetcar; carolers and actors from Argenta Community Theater’s A Christmas Carol in period costume, and a few extra surprises. Free street parking is available downtown.

Argenta Plaza is a $5.36-million community space owned by the City of North Little Rock that will be managed by the North Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau after the festival. The plaza features a “front porch” area with modern swings; a stage with 40-foot video projection wall; a water wall; fountains and a “backyard” area with trees. Except for the backyard area, where the new First Orion headquarters is being completed, all will be open for the November 30 event. Argenta Plaza will be available to rent for public and private events, and a 2020 event lineup is already in the works.

The North Little Rock Sertoma Christmas Parade will be the day after the festival (Sunday, December 1) at 2 p.m. on Main Street. Tickets are on sale now for A Christmas Carol at Argenta Community Theater Friday, December 6, through Saturday, December 14.
