Brette's Q&A:

What got you in to travel writing?
I started writing about travel for regional parenting magazines when I had small children. Mostly I find that anything I'm passionate about in life, I end up writing about.

What’s the most challenging part of travel writing for you?
Honestly, for me, it is tracking down email addresses for editors.

What is one thing [equipment or personal item] you can’t go without on the road?
My emergency medical kit. I have a small zippered pouch that has just about everything for any sort of situation and over the years it has received heavy use. It's particularly valuable when traveling out of the US since you never know what you can find or not over the counter elsewhere.

What’s your most unusual and/or memorable travel experience?
My happiest most memorable one is probably crossing the border into Scotland. I'd waited my whole life to go to the country of my ancestors and it was incredibly emotional. My most memorable unhappy experience was when we returned to our rental car at Versailles to find it parked in and the parking attendant just shrugged.

What is the best piece of advice you could give to a rookie travel journalist?
Find something that excites you that is a niche, whether is a part of the world or a specific kind of travel and work at writing about that.
