 Douglas' Q&A

What got you in to travel writing?
I am fairly new to travel writing but have been doing travel photography for over 25 years. I am now enjoying putting the two together, and it is not as hard as I thought it would be.

What’s the most challenging part of travel writing for you?
The lead in or first paragraph. Once I have that the rest works itself out.

What is one thing [equipment or personal item] you can’t go without on the road?
A good pair of shoes.

What’s your most unusual and/or memorable travel experience?
It was a trip to visit my family in Florida for Christmas 1989. It started snowing on Christmas Eve and stayed on the ground Christmas day. Our kids loved it and so did I.

What is the best piece of advice you could give to a rookie travel journalist?
Find a spouse or significant other with a real job.
