October 30, 2018 - Orange County will commemorate Veterans Day with a ceremony at the new Memorial site located near Seymour Center/Southern Human Services in Chapel Hill. The event will take place at 11AM on Monday, November 12, 2018. Veterans Day is marked each year on November 11th, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice (cease-fire) that ended that war. The armistice was signed in 1918 and President Woodrow Wilson first began the tradition of it as a day of American national remembrance in November 1919. In 1938 it became an official national holiday and in 1954, it became known as Veterans Day instead of Armistice Day.

“On Veterans Day, we remember and honor all who have served in our nation’s military, regardless of how, when, or where they served. We honor their patriotic commitment and their sacrifices of safety, comfort, and well-being, as well as that of their families,” said Bruce Runberg, Chapel Hill resident and member of the Orange County Veterans Memorial project. Runberg said that the Veterans Memorial Committee is currently working to raise $25,000 for the next phase of the Veterans Memorial: a permanent flagpole and rock and landscaping surrounding the flagpole.
