 Destination Salem:

Destination Salem is the Office of Tourism and Cultural Affairs for the city of Salem, Massachusetts. Salem is recognized around the world for its rich history, which includes the tragic Salem Witch Trials of 1692, a glorious maritime era that left its indelible mark on Salem through architecture, museums, and artifacts, and for its month-long celebration of Halloween. Today more than one million people visit Salem annually. For more information, visit Salem.org.

Destination Salem's Q&A:

What's one attraction that can’t be missed when visiting your destination?

The House of the Seven Gables is celebrating its 350th anniversary this year, which makes it the perfect time to visit New England’s oldest wooden mansion, which was made famous by American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne.

What story ideas will travel media uncover at your destination?

  • Salem’s culinary scene is booming. We have great food tours and a spirits tour that connect some of our best food and drink with Salem’s rich maritime history, which was built upon the Spice Trade.
  • Salem is most recognized for the Witch Trials of 1692, but our contemporary modern witch scene is equally intriguing. Learn how to read tarot during a walking workshop, visit a local botanicals shop to pick up natural remedies, or sit down with a Salem Witch for a psychic reading at one of Salem’s Witch shops.
  • More than 500,000 people come from around the globe to experience Salem Haunted Happenings each October.  Featuring more than 31 days of events, Salem Haunted Happenings includes parades, costume parties, psychic fairs, haunted walking tours, an a cappella festival, Wicked Wednesdays, theatrical performances, and more.

What plans, events does your destination have scheduled that travel media should be aware of?

Salem is a year-round destination with exciting changing exhibitions at the Peabody Essex Museum (www.pem.org), annual festivals including Christmas in Salem Historic House Tours, Salem So Sweet Chocolate and Ice Sculptures, Salem Film Fest documentary film festival, Massachusetts Poetry Festival, Salem Arts Fest, and Salem Maritime Festival.

Is there anything else you feel travel media should know about your destination?
